SkinPen® is a microneedling device that can help reverse signs of aging and other concerns without incisions, a lengthy recovery period, or the risk of scars. The first microneedling device to be approved by the FDA, SkinPen® has a long and trusted history of safety and efficacy. We are pleased to offer this service at our Overland Park location.
What is SkinPen® Microneedling?
Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatment that can reduce signs of aging. Traditional microneedling is performed with a roller device that creates multiple microscopic skin wounds, stimulating collagen production.
Collagen is a structural protein that produces soft, smooth, and lifted skin. With age, collagen production slows, resulting in skin laxity, fine lines, and deep wrinkles. The tiny puncture wounds created by microneedling stimulate collagen production, allowing the body to naturally address signs of aging, acne scars, and more.
SkinPen® is a microneedling device, but it is much more precise, sanitary, and effective than the traditional rolling method. SkinPen® needles cycle at a rate of 100 stamps per second. This is substantially more than can be accomplished with a roller. As a result, SkinPen® can produce highly reliable and noticeable results –all of this with a treatment that can be performed during your lunch hour.
SkinPen® Microneedling Treatment
SkinPen® treatment typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. A topical anesthetic is applied before treatment begins to ensure your absolute comfort. During treatment, the SkinPen® device is gently moved over the treatment area where it works to create micro punctures. Once completed, a topical antibiotic cream is applied to help prevent irritation and infection.
It may take six to eight treatments for optimal outcomes with SkinPen. These treatments, spaced three to four weeks apart, help preserve patient comfort. However, while it is common for multiple treatment sessions to achieve ideal results, the actual number varies from patient to patient.
SkinPen® Microneedling Recovery and Results
- 1-3 Days
- High Activity
Skin rejuvenation with SkinPen® may result in some redness and swelling after each session. Similar to a sunburn, this should subside within a few days. Some people see a return to “normal” looking skin within a day.
Pain is not expected following this procedure. Most people can resume normal activities almost right away.
While resuming normal activities will be possible, some care will need to be taken in the days immediately following SkinPen® treatment. This will include limiting sun exposure and using any ointments that we have prescribed. These same steps will need to be repeated following each of your SkinPen® treatments.
SkinPen® results are often noticeable shortly after your second treatment and can last several months or even years. Your skin will continue to age, and factors such as environment, genetics, and lifestyle choices will also play their part. Proper skin care can help counter some of this, as can maintenance treatments performed as needed or on a schedule customized to meet your needs. We will discuss these options in greater detail during your time in our care.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Can I Combine SkinPen with Other Treatments?
Absolutely. While SkinPen microneedling is exceptionally effective on its own, adding a peel, facial, or another minimally/non-invasive treatment can help to improve results in some cases. During your microneedling consultation, we will carefully evaluate your areas of concern and discuss all possible treatment options to help you choose the safest and most effective for your needs.
The best way to learn how many treatments you may require is through a one-on-one consultation at our Leawood office. During this visit, Dr. Young will carefully evaluate your areas of concern and create a treatment plan that meets your needs and timeline.
-
Is Treatment with SkinPen Painful?
Microneedling is not painful, but we apply a topical anesthetic to guarantee your comfort during treatment. You may experience some redness and swelling after the procedure, but this should be neither painful nor limiting. Downtime is not needed after microneedling.
Some patients take an OTC analgesic before and after microneedling, but many of these can thin the blood. You must avoid NSAIDs for three days before and after treatment to help avoid excessive bleeding risks.
-
What are the Risks of Microneedling?
Bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling, and peeling are all possible after microneedling. Risks for infection and skin trauma are also possible, though more common when microneedling is performed at home. Fortunately, in the hands of an experienced and attentive aesthetic professional, microneedling is exceptionally safe and wonderfully effective.
You can help reduce your risk of complications by following the pre and postoperative directions provided by our office. We will provide personalized recommendations during your time in our care.
-
Is Microneedling Safe for all Skin Types and Tones?
Yes! Microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. SkinPen microneedling does not involve chemicals or heat. Instead, it relies on your body’s natural healing response to stimulate collagen and elastin and improve the appearance of the treatment area. Microneedling is one of the safest non-surgical treatment options for darker complexions.
