Brow lift surgery is used to smooth the skin on the forehead. The procedure can also lift drooping eyebrows into a more alert and youthful position. In some cases, a brow lift will also reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, the wrinkles that extend from the corners of the eyes towards the temples.
What is a Brow Lift?
The brow lift, or forehead lift, can address drooping and deep wrinkles in the brow area that may make you appear fatigued and angry. Sagging (ptosis) of the eyebrows occurs as a person ages, just as the rest of a person’s skin. This eyebrow ptosis not only causes a tired, angry appearance but also creates excess upper eyelid skin and “crow’s feet” wrinkles lateral to the eyes. Many patients need the eyelids and eyebrows addressed simultaneously, and the brow lift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) work well as combined plastic surgeries.
Most of the benefits of brow lift surgery are aesthetic and include a more attractive and relaxed appearance. However, when eyebrows obstruct vision, a brow lift can also help to improve the visual field by lifting skin and brows away from the eyes.
Men and women of all ages want to improve the appearance of facial lines, wrinkles, sagging, or volume loss. The best candidates for a forehead lift are in good health and want to reverse the effects of aging, such as:
- Inherited low-set eyebrows
- Sagging eyebrows that give the appearance of excess upper eyelid skin
- “Crow’s feet” wrinkles lateral to your eyes
- Forehead wrinkles
Brow Lift Recovery and Results
- 1-2 weeks
- Low activity
Brow lift surgeries are performed outpatient, so you can go home and heal after your surgery. You’ll likely have some swelling and bruising that may worsen 1-2 days after your forehead lift. Ice packs on the area and elevating your head for the first few days may help. Dr. Young will review your post-operative instructions so you know what to expect during recovery.
You’ll have several appointments throughout this process, from the consultation to a follow-up visit to check your healing. Scalp sutures are removed after about a week, and most bruising and swelling should dissipate within two weeks.
Forehead lifts can produce results for seven to ten years or more. Sun exposure, a poor diet, inadequate skincare, smoking, and excessive alcohol use will all work to undo your brow lift results. Conversely, proper skin care, including sunscreen use and a healthy lifestyle, may help your results last several years. We will provide information on how best to maintain and lengthen your results to help ensure the longest-lasting outcomes possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Are There Risks to a Brow Lift Procedure?
Risks associated with a brow lift include general surgical risks such as infection and bleeding, along with adverse reactions to anesthesia or medications used during the procedure. Risks specific to brow lift surgery include unfavorable scaring, unpleasing or asymmetrical results, facial nerve injury, skin loss, and hair loss.
These risks are uncommon, but not impossible. They are greatly reduced when you choose to work with a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs brow lift surgery in an accredited surgical facility such as a hospital, ambulatory center, or in-office surgical suite.
-
Does a Brow Lift Procedure Leave Scars?
Brow lift incisions tend to fade over the course of six months to a year. In many cases, incisions are hidden behind the hairline, making scars unnoticeable. You reduce your risks of thick and unsightly scars by following all of the pre and postoperative care instructions provided by our office. These include cleaning instructions along with recommendations against tobacco use, certain medications, and other irritants that can cause large and ropey scars.
-
Does a Brow Lift require anesthesia?
Which of these options will be best for your needs depends on factors unique to your anatomy, medical history, and desires. During your time in our care, we will provide honest information about these options to help you select the best one for your needs.
-
How long does a Brow Lift procedure take?
A forehead lift may take one to three hours depending on factors unique to the patient. We offer both traditional and endoscopic brow lift options, enabling Dr. Young to customize each procedure. The best way to determine how long your surgery may take is through a one-on-one consultation at our Leawood office.
